Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a significant problem in US hospitals, causing a large number of deaths each year. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common type of HAI, accounting for around 40% of cases.

The use of indwelling urethral catheters contributes to 80% of these UTIs. When nursing homes are included, over one million cases of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are estimated annually.

In the US, approximately five million urinary catheters are placed each year. Between 12% and 25% of hospitalized patients receive a urinary catheter, even when it is not medically necessary. The longer a catheter remains in place, the higher the risk of developing a UTI. The daily risk ranges from 3% to 7%, increasing to 25% after a week, and almost 100% after one month. Among those with a UTI, 10% will experience symptoms, and up to 3% may develop a bloodstream infection.

To determine the necessity of catheterization, an ultrasound bladder scanning test is commonly used. However, prevention is crucial in reducing the occurrence of UTIs.

The use of the Vitascan LT bladder scanner can help prevent unnecessary catheterization, reduce rates of nosocomial UTIs, and improve efficiency while saving costs and staff time. The Vitascan LT bladder scanner is a noninvasive, quick, and easy-to-use tool.
